Chiang Mai - Sunday Market

Photo Gallery of Sunday Market held on every Sunday in the old part of the city of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
Sunday Market, held at every Sunday night on the street from Tha Phae Gate up to Wat Phra Singh on the west part of the old city.
Very crowded but very fun to walk around. You must drop by here if you are interested in shopping ! :D
Chiangmai is the largest city in Northern Thailand, about one hour from Bangkok by airplane.  It was the capital of " Lanna Thai ", the ancient kingdom in the north of Thailand.
(Lannathai kingdom: Founded by King Meng Rai in 1296 with Chiang mai as the capital.)

The center of the city, the old city area, is surrounded by city walls and there is the famous gate called "Tha Phae Gate" (A) in the East. From this gate, the market called "Sunday Market" is held at every Sunday night on the street up to "Wat Phra Singh" (B), the most venerated and famous temple in Chiang mai in the west part of the old city.

Around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, shops start to open and it's really crowded from 5 to 10 o'clock at night. The street turns free of vehicle and many many shops line around the Thapae Gate and the street from the gate to Wat Phra Singh.
I visited Chiangmai a lot of times but never had a chance to go this Sunday Market. They sell various things such as food, folk crafts, paintings, clothes, pottery and so on, and some street performances, like playing music, can be seen.
Even if you are not so interested in shopping, I'm sure you'll enjoy the market very much.

By the way, I heard that this Sunday Market is for the local people, another famous market "Night Bazaar" is for tourists, the size and the number of visitors of "Sunday Market" is more than "Night Bazaar". Hmmm, I'm not sure if it's true or not. What I'm sure is I love both of the markets anyway. :D

Sunday Market - Around the market

Now, we made it ! The Sunday Market !
Even though I visited Chiang Mai so many times, this was the first time to see the market. (May 2012) I went to the Night Bazaar several times, however, I didn't know there was another market. (Hey, check a guide book beforehand !)
My wife suddenly told me, "Come to think of it, they have a market on Sunday around the Thapae Gate. ..." What !? Hey, let's go and check it out !

The picture above shows Thapae Gate, the entrance to the market. Wow, crowded. Now, let's get in and enjoy the market ! :D (We visited there around 7 to 8 o'clock at night)
