[60th Anniversary] General public celebrates

The speeches at Chitralada Villa, Dusit Palace of His Majesty was held 9 Jun 2006.

There are not so many occasions where His Majesty makes a speech to the general public directly. In this opportunity, many citizens, the news says 25 thousand or 1 million people in yellow, filled the place all over.

By the way, the colour " yellow " is seen or heard in many occasions related this anniversary. This colour is, the birthday of the King is Monday and the colour of Monday in Thailand is " yellow ". That is, people wear a yellow shirt and show their love to the King.

In the address of His Majesty, he stated that Thai people should firmly uphold virtue and unity, and it leads them to bring progress and prosperity to the country.

  • Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall
was started to be built in 1908 under the reign of King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) and was completed in 1915 in the reign of King Mongkut (King Rama VI).
It was used as the parliament building but after the new parliament building was built behind it, it looks like Ananta Samakhom Throne hall is used only for important ceremonies.

The Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phraya River was held 12th, June in 2006, attended by the Emperor and Empress of Japan also.

A barges is a flat-bottomed boat, built mainly for river and canal transport of heavy goods.(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

The Royal Barge Procession starts from the Grand Palace (Wat Phra Kaeo) and goes down to the temple, Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn). A total of 52 spectacle barges sail down the river.

They practiced again and again for the ceremony, and the pictures here were taken on 9th June, one of dress rehearsals.

< Royal Barge Procession >
  • It seems that Royal Barge Procession dates back to the Ayutthaya period (1351|1767). It was held for religious and ceremonial purposes.
  • Royal Barge Procession was regularly taken place, However, it seems that it is held only on a special event nowadays because t costs a lot.
  • Royal Barges are stored in the Royal Barges National Museum along the Chao Phraya River, located around the entrance of BangGorg-Noi canal.

By the way, they sell yellow shirts here and a great number of people rushed and bought them; there was a day when one million shirts were sold within a half day.

This is because "yellow" is the birthday colour of His Majesty and people want to show their love to the King to wear a yellow shirt, and also the government recommend that people should wear a yellow shirt everyday until 15 June 2006 and every Monday up to the end of the year 2006.
