Lamphun - Gates, Wall, and the Town
Photo Gallery of City gates, walls and the town of Lamphun, Northern Thailand.
Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Thailand and is well-known as the first royal city of Northern Thailand. It was called "Haripunchai" and flourished for a long time. The town is very peaceful, situated along Kuang River (tributary of Ping River), about 30 kilometers and about 30 minutes by car from Chiang Mai, the major city in northern part. The city, Lamphun, still has old city gates and walls because it was a capital city of Haripunchai kingdom long time ago. (It's like Chiang Mai city. Or Lamphun has an older history and is it better to say Chiang Mai looks like Lamphun, isn't it ?)
I didn't know this was all but when you go around the town along the moat, you'll see gates around streets to go out or get in the town.
- Pratu Chang Si
If you come to Lamphun from Chiangmai by car, you'll usually go under this gate. This gate is located to the north of the city and on the top in the map right. - Old City Wall
This wall can be seen when you go in a clockwise fashion in a southern direction from Pratu Chang Si. This wall looks like Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai. - Pratu Ta Kham
From the Old City Wall, go down further in a southern direction and this gate, Pratu Ta Kahm, facing Kuang River (tributary of Ping River) will be shown. - Pratu Lee
The next from Pratu Ta Kham is this gate, Pratu Lee, after going around the corner in the south. - Pratu Mahawan
After Pratu Lee, go up to the north and you'll see the gate, Pratu Mahawan near Wat Mahawan in the west of the town. This gate is the most impressive to me because it stands in a spacious area with old walls.
Now, let's walk around the town with me ! :D

Now, let's walk around the town. I'm afraid there is no picture of the "Old City Wall" but city gates must be seen because they are located on each side of the city, north, south, east and west. |

Some city walls still remain like this in the town.

Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Thailand and is well-known as the first royal city of Northern Thailand. It was called "Haripunchai" and flourished for a long time. You'll see a lot of venerable temples and it's wonderful for you to visit the national museum in the town to check the history and see remains. |

Gates, Wall, Town - Streets ! |
Let's go and see on streets ! |
The town of Lamphun is not big but cozy and peaceful, however, the center is kind of busy.
The street around Wat Phrathat Haripunchai. | Kuang River running along the town. |
A moat in the city. | Streets between Chiang Mai and Lamphun. |
This is an old street, so-called ChiangMai-Lamphun street between Lamphun and ChiangMai. The trees were offered by a prince of Chiang Mai in 1899 and you'll see a lot of big trees blessed with Buddhist orange swathes are on the both side of the street. A wonderful way to drive. |
Gates, Wall, Town - Something else ! |
Other interesting things I saw in Lamphun. |
Shopping bridge In front of Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai, there is a bridge over Kuang River. Actually, this is a shopping bridge and there are a lot of gift shops inside. Enjoy shopping ! :D |
Next to the shopping bridge Next to the shopping bridge is a narrow way for motorbikes. Be careful not to walk with no attention. |
A lot of shops ! Inside the shopping bridge. A long way ! So many shops from end to end, You can't help but enjoy shopping ! :D (I bought a cute T-shirt with an elephant for a gift.) |
A market along the street on the way back to Chiang Mai. A lot of food are sold. |
A lot of mushrooms. | What are they ? :D |
