Lamphun - Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai

Photo Gallery of Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai (or Wat Phra that Haripunchai) in Lamphun, Northern Thailand.
(Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Thailand and is well-known as the first royal city of Northern Thailand. It was called "Haripunchai" and flourished for a long time. The town is very peaceful, situated along Kuang River (tributary of Ping River), about 30 kilometers and about 30 minutes by car from Chiang Mai, the major city in northern part.)

Wat Phra That Haripunchai is a royal temple, located in the center of the town in Lamphun province. It was constructed in 1108 A.D (some say 1157 A.D) in the reign of King Athittayarat (or Arthitayarat) who was the successor of Queen Chamathewi of Hariphunchai Kingdom.

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai used to be King Athittayarat's palace. In the palace compound, there has been 2 layers of walls, the inner and the outer walls. Later, he offered his palace to be Buddhist monastery and the outer wall was demolished, then a couple of lion sculptures with open mouths were put next to the east door.

The temple has a huge pagoda, Phrathat Haripunchai or Phra Borommathat Haripunchai, the first pagoda which contained the remains of Buddha (Buddha's hair) in the North of Thailand. Traditionally, every king of Hariphunchai dynasty must worship the pagoda before the coronation. Even Tibetan monks of Himalaya had to come and worship this pagoda of Haripunchai or Hariphunchai annually as well. That is, the pagoda was greatly influential and Lamphun was the center of Buddhism in the vast area; in Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan river basins as well as in Khong and Salawin river basins.

The pagoda at Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is especially recognized as the oldest pagoda and was praised by King Rama IV who stated that it was one of the eight famous pagodas in Thailand.
(Hmm, where are the other seven pagodas ... ?)
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is the pagoda for those who were born in the year of chicken.

There is a big bell in the temple ground. It's said to be the biggest one in the world.
(I guess the bell in another temple, Wat PhraPhutthabat Tak Pha, in Lamphun is bigger.)
(Every full moon day of the sixth lunar month, there is temple fair.)

Now, let's go and check with me ! :D
(By the way, I already visited this temple 3 or 4 times while I didn't notice it.)

[Wat Phrathat Haripunchai] Hurry to the temple !

A pair of lions are waiting for your visit in front of the entrance.
Now, we are in front of the temple, Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai. The two lions are waiting for your visit. When I visited here for the first time, I was very surprised because the scale of the temple was beyond my imagination. I clearly remember that I enjoyed walking around in this temple very much.
Now your turn. What kind of impression will this temple give you ? :D
The entrance is over there in this picture.
You see how big the entrance and the lions are, comparing to someone walking on the left.

The chedi of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai was modeled after it.

[Wat Phrathat Haripunchai] A quiet chedi

A calm and quiet chedi stand next to the huge chedi.

Compared to the huge chedi, Phrathat Haripunchai, this one is smaller but it looks to have a long history.
The stepped pyramid style reminds me of the well-known chedi, Kukut, in Wat Cham Thewi. In fact, the Kukut was a model for this chedi. You'll see the explanation at Wat Cham Thewi.

[Wat Phrathat Haripunchai] Other buildings behind the chedi

This temple has a lot of buildings as well as the main hall. You'll see them behind the chedi.
This is a museum, I've never entered, though. The board shows "50th anniversary Bank of Ayudhaya PCL. Museum BLD."
Next to the museum, other hall enshrining Buddha statues.
